Darrel Smith, Sr.

Darrel Smith, Sr. of Johnstown died Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at the Wyoming Medical Center. He was 52 years old.

There will be a Native American service held at 7pm on Tuesday, May 26 at the family home, 185 Johnstown Valley Road, Kinnear. Graveside services will be held 10am Wednesday, May 27, at Cady Cemetery in Fort Washakie.

Darrel James Smith, Sr. was born August 10, 1967, in Seattle, WA, the son of Alexander Smith, Jr. and Marion (Luoma) Smith.

He was a lifelong resident of the Wind River Reservation and attended school at Wind River. He earned his mechanic’s certificate from Casper College. He worked for the Northern Arapaho Tribe Food Distribution Program as warehouse employee then eventual director.

His family said he enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, a fan of Kansas City Chiefs and being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his mother, Marion Smith of Johnstown; wife, Benita (Oldman) Smith of Johnstown; sons, Darrel (Ashley Guzman) Smith, Jr. of Kinnear, Michael Smith, Matthew Smith, Marcus Oldman of Johnstown; daughters, Lawrencetta Bell of Johnstown; brother Kenneth Smith of Johnstown; sisters, Shelley Mbonu of Johnstown, Ladawn Smith of Ethete, Trina Smith of Johnstown, and Trisha (Terry) Cachelin of Boulder Flats; grandchildren, Tanieca, Josie, Jesus Alexander, Tristin, Kyrynn , Atavia, Thaine, Jamie, Santiage, Darrel III, Shane Troy, and Samiah; uncles, Bob Luoma of Riverton, Clarence Smith of Riverton, Preston Smith of Pocatello, ID, Loren Smith of Lander; aunts, Rolanda Smith of Lander; godmother Alvena Oldman; numerous grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and the Standing Bear, Spoonhunter, Aragon, Laroque, Romero, Jeffrey, Tidzump, Dorrence, Shongutsie, Urban, Thomas, Sage, Pebeahsy, Hereford, Lahoe, Johnson, Taveapont, Ouray, Brown, Bell, Hanway, Friday, and Luoma families.

He is preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Alexander, Sr. and Julia (Aragon) Smith, Jack, Sr. and Maxine (Loosemore) Luoma; uncles, Jack Luoma, Jr., Harold Ouray, and John Smith; aunts, Rhonda Smith and Alysia (Smith) Musalem; daughter Jamie Bell; granddaughter,  Angel Rayne Smith; godfather Jimmy Oldman.

Darrel's love of children was so sincere. I was 19, Grant was 20, and Ashley was 16 months. We were living together and Grant had his buddies over. Darrel spent the entire time playing with Ashley. She just loved him. As a young self conscience mother it meant a lot to me. Rest in peace my friend you will always have a place in my heart. My sincere condolences to the Smith family. You are a shining example of what love looks like.

I am so very sorry for the family. Darrell was a great guy. Very fond memories of him. No words. Forever missed. RIP old friend. Tina Portlock Pugh.
